Incorporated in 1979 and headquartered in Pasadena, California, The Planetary Society is a nonprofit public organization with members from more than 100 countries. Its membership of nearly 100,000 makes the Society the largest space interest group in the world. The Society was established to encourage and support-through education, public information events and special programs-the exploration of the solar system and the search for extraterrestrial life. The Society also distributes information about planetary discoveries through its publications (The Planetary Report, Mars Underground News, Bioastronomy News and others) and regular communication with government and space agencies, scientists, engineers, educators, students and private organizations.
Society education programs include curriculum and educational media kit development, teacher workshops, the National Science Teachers Association annual conference (which the Society cosponsors), conferences with the United Nations and the European Space Agency, and programs that involve students in the construction of an instrument package for a flight mission.
We encourage you to become a member and offer your input into the space and planetary education programs being planned for future missions to Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto and-of course-Mars.
